Rio de Janeiro Carnival
Carnivals first started in Ancient Rome and quickly spread to other Italian cities and then to other European countries. Nowadays Carnival celebrations take place in towns and cities all over the world. The Carnival is a celebration or colourful parade with some elements of a circus and public street party. People often dress up or put on masks during these celebrations.
The amazing Carnival in Rio de Janeiro takes place between late February and early March. It is the most famous holiday in Brazil. More than one million tourists from Brazil and all over the world visit Rio de Janeiro to enjoy this unforgettable celebration.
Carnival Sunday is seven weeks before Easter Sunday. The main event – the Samba Parade – starts at 9 p.m. on Sunday. This samba marathon is more than an explosion of music and brilliant colours, it is also a competition. Thousands of excited participants arrive in the city. They dance in the streets and watch the parade lasting all night.
The focus of the main parade are the samba dance schools. They work hard to prepare their costumes and to find the best music for their show. In front of Copacabana beach, dancers in colourful costumes demonstrate their dancing skills and have fun. The whole city, from the youngest children to the oldest men and women, takes part in this colourful celebration. This is the ideal time for the whole family to have a good time together.
